Overview of Air Hose
Air hoses are lengths of industrial-strength tubing used to transfer pressurised air or other gases from a compressor to another location, most commonly the operation end of a tool.Air hoses must be both strong and flexible to be effective. They must deliver a consistent level of pressure or power and withstand high pressures without tearing or breaking their seals.

Materials of Air Hose
POLYURETHANE: Most widely specified tubing for industrial automation, combining the best features of plastic and rubber. Advantages include strength, flexibility, kink resistance, and chemical resistance including to petroleum-based chemicals. Working pressure is 150 psi or more, high enough for most plant settings. Available in a variety of colors.
PVC: Low cost and highly flexible. Wide range of chemical and corrosion resistance, along with excellent wear resistance. Not quite as sturdy as polyurethane, but can be used in food and beverage applications. May be sterilized repeatedly. Can be made in custom sizes, shapes, and colors, but is usually clear.
NYLON AND POLYETHYLENE: Less flexible than PVC and polyurethane, but great for straight piping runs throughout plants or around large machines. Polyethylene was once the most popular tubing choice and is still widely used. It can kink if bent too much, is only rated to 125 psi (depending on size), and has a limited temperature range, but works extremely well in low-pressure applications.
POLYPROPYLENE: Lightest thermoplastic available. Advantages include superior dimensional stability and electrical properties, chemical resistance, and good surface hardness. Often used in food manufacturing. Resists UV radiation in outdoor settings. May be sterilized above 212°F.
PTFE: Specialized material for applications with high temperature, pressure, and chemical resistance requirements. Suitable for temperatures to 500°F and features working pressure to more than 370 psi (based on diameter). Flame retardant, chemically inert, good dielectric properties, and can be used around static electricity.
Size Of Air Hose
We measure air hoses by their internal diameter (or I.D). the larger the hose I.D, the more air it'll be able to carry. While the external diameter of air hoses will vary wildly depending on the quality of the hose and the material it's made from, common internal sizes of air hose are 6mm, 8mm and 10mm internal diameter.
Hand held tools such as spray guns and nailers tend to require 1-3 CFM and will work perfectly well with a 6mm hose. A heavy duty impact wrench is more likely to require 6 CFM+, so you'll probably require an 8mm or 10mm hose to run at full capacity.
The diameter of a hose will affect the overall weight of the line quite dramatically. Adding a couple of extra millimetres to the hose I.D. soon adds up over a distance. For small handheld tools, where dexterity counts, choose a 6mm hose.
Air Hose Connectors and Accessories
Connectors are a vital component of pressurised gas and air tools, ensuring a reliable flow of pressure from the compressor. They are used to join hoses to compressors or tools, to attach lengths of hose or divide a hose in different directions. They are also known as couplings, couplers fittings, splitters or manifolds. As with other types of adaptor, those for air hoses are typically divided into male and female connections.
Different-sized air hoses require different adaptors. A further factor is the pressure tolerance required. The following are some of the most commonly-seen types of connector:
- ¼" British Standard Pipe Thread (BSPT)
- ¼" Push Connector Locking (PCL)
- 3/8" National Pipe Thread (NPT)
Despite the name, British Standard Pipe is an internationally used standard for connected threaded tapered male to female pipes and tubing. Male connections are labelled 'BSPM' and female fittings 'BSPF'.
PCL couplings are a variant design made by British company Pneumatic Components Ltd (PCL). They are operated by a collar which exerts backwards pressure on the hose and are ideal for use in quieter fixed settings.
NPT is a similar standard to BSPT but with a steeper angle. Male NPT connectors create a tight seal by stretching the female receptacle. NPT and BSPT connectors are compatible but do not create a seal when joined.
